Temu and Shein raised prices, removed products when Trump’s rates came into effect in China

Lorianna Calhoun, a Shein buyer, tells Wired that the approximately 170 items that were once on her Shein Wish list are not available now. She noted that they had disappeared on Thursday afternoon. It is not clear how Shein and Temu can choose which items to remove, but Calhoun says that the majority of the goods she observed were at least in her case were eyelashes and hair products. “If things usually sell out, you can still click on the item and see all the reviews and things,” she explains. “But for the lashes, it now says,” Sorry that this item has been removed. This product does not exist. ‘”

A Reddit user, who asked for privacy reasons to remain anonymous, shared screenshots with Wired showing half of the products in their Shein shop basket, also did not become available on Thursday, mainly objects from Shein’s Sheglam beauty drugs . They say they plan to wait for it and see if the products are returning to Sheein’s website soon. ‘Shein and Temu will still get my business. If they raise their prices, it will hopefully be a little, ”says the Reddit user.

Temu and Shein did not respond to requests for comments from Wired.

In 2023, a third of the De Minimis shuts arrived in the US came from China, according to Chinese export and US import data. Many came by air freight within a few days, rather than via the cargo of the sea, which could last weeks or even more than a month.

“These businesses have perfected these modern miracle, which is sent from China to the US in a very consistent and reliable way,” says Juozas Kaziukėnas, founder of the E -Trade Intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse. The rates that Trump announced last week not only significantly increased the cost of businesses such as Shein and Temu, but this can also delay the delivery process, as logistical enterprises and customs brokers adapt to government requirements.

But not all the products and services of Temu and Shein are affected, as both businesses have increasingly stored goods in US warehouses over the past few years to get even faster orders to customers. The Biden Administration has also repeatedly indicated that it is interested in reforming the De Minimis input tax exemption, which motivates companies to reduce their confidence on it.

From Friday, the US homepage of Temu was almost entirely filled with products that the company specified, from local warehouses – meaning they cleaned all the US Customs and possibly crossed the border before the rates came into effect even .
