Trump, XI is likely to discuss trade soon: Besent

President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are likely to speak ‘soon’ amid trade tensions between the two countries, Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said on Sunday.

Besent said during a Sunday interview about CBS’s “Face the Nation” that he expects to see conversations between the two leaders “soon”, which will include discussions on critical minerals.

“I am confident that when President Trump and Party Chairman XI have a call, it will be ironed out,” he said. “But the fact that they withhold some of the products they released during our agreement – maybe it’s a mistake in the Chinese system, maybe it’s intentional.”

When host Margaret Brennan asked if there was a scheduled date for the discussion, Besent replied: “I believe we will see something soon, Margaret.”

Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, has hinted that the two leaders may have discussions as soon as this week.

“We expect, President Trump is going to have a wonderful discussion about the trade negotiations this week, that’s our expectation,” Hassett said on ABC’s “this week.”

Their statements come days after Besent said that talks with China are “a little quiet about China.”

Last week, a federal court ruled that an emergency law did not grant Trump unilateral authority to set up rates on almost every country, imposing the president’s April “Liberation Day” tariffs and earlier orders imposing rates on Canada, Mexico and China.

A Federal Appeal Court lifted the first decision a day later, although a separate federal court blocked the majority of the president’s rates on the same day.
