The Doge takeover is worse than you think

Let us not forget that doge people have fired to prevent bird flu and protect the American nuclear arsenal. (The problem with throwing a chainsaw is that you do not make clean cuts.) The agencies involved allegedly tried to rent the workers back. Fine. But even if they can do, is the long -term question that has not been answered yet, who would stay? Who would work under a regime that is so calves and incompetent that it would mistakenly fire the only handful of people who actually know how to care for the nukes? According to a recent Bulwark report, the brain drain is already underway.

And this is all before the actual reduction of power begins, mass purification of civil servants that will be carried out soon, it seems that it is with a help of do-modified, automatic software. The US government is about to lose decades of institutional knowledge about who knows how many agencies, including specialists who are not readily replaced by loyalists.

At least Elon Musk acknowledged that Doge mistakes would make and promise quick corrections. He even exclaimed one on Wednesday, the cancellation of a USAID program designed to prevent the spread of Ebola. “We immediately restored the Ebola prevention,” he said during an appearance at Trump’s first Cabinet meeting. “And there was no interruption.”

This is not the case, as the Washington Post first reported. Not only was Ebola prevention not restored – it was and continued to reduce it – but the Trump administration also said on Wednesday it would end almost 10,000 contracts and grants from USAID and the State Department. Many of these contracts are an attempt to reduce some form of suffering in a part of the world. These are too many individual stories to tell, too many tragedies that unfold too far.

It is worse than you think in the same way that your brain breaks a little when you try to see how deep the ocean is. It is worse than you think, because by the time the courts have done the damage, it has already been done. It is worse than you think, because the people who run the government do not have a higher mission than to see how it burns.

Federal agencies can be absolutely more effective, but we are long past the point where efficiency is a plausible purpose. Doge’s cuts have no clear regard for civil society or opportunity costs or long -term strategic thinking. Their targets are Elon Musk’s and Project 2025’s targets. They found no fraud, only democracy at work. They are apparently eager to see what happens when it does not do anymore.

It’s worse than you think, because so far, all the dogs have dropped a rock in the middle of a dam. If you think it’s bad, wait for the ripples.
